The paper provides an overview on major environmental problems caused by farming practices (and to a degree by industry). It discuses various problems related to declining soil fertility, use of pesticides, accumulation of heavy metals in agricultural soils, etc. Finally, it questions validity and enforcement of some environmental and agricultural legislation and argues that the way out is in adopting organic and bio-dynamic farming.

Zum Thema "Nährstoffeffizienz" liegt ein weites Spektrum wissenschaftlicher Untersuchungen der verschiedensten Fachgebiete vor. In diesem Beitrag wurden die vorhandenen Untersuchungsergebnisse anhand von zwei Formen der Charakterisierung nährstoffeffizienter Sorten strukturiert. Einerseits wird mit dem deskriptiven Ansatz eine Beurteilung der Ertragsleistungen einer Sorte in verschiedenen Nährstoff-Umwelten in den Vordergrund gestellt. Hieraus ist eine direkte Selektion unter Freilandbedingungen abzuleiten. Due to the benefits of diversity, autonomous ecosystem management and careful farmers' stewardship, pest and disease control doesn't pose a profound problem in ecological agriculture practice. However, during the conversion period, and in ecological horticulture, particularly in fruit growing, this preventive control is often not sufficient enough, and additional control, mostly (curative) spraying is needed. The problems of balancing agricultural production methods against environmental concern cannot be solved by focusing on single activities of livestock farming and experimental knowledge alone because of interactions between herds and crops and between the production system and the manager. An alternative method based on studies in private farms is proposed to evaluate the effects of the production intensity on pollution and resource efficiency. Energy use and crop yield in gram and grass-clover crops registered on conventional and organic mixed dairy farms were analyzed in order to facilitate modelization of energy efficiency in different production systems on different danish soil types. Farmers' approaches to organic farming; motivations, barriers and different strategies Organic Eprints

Conversion to organic agriculture as a process of social adaptation was qualitatively analysed by the sociologists Barbro Vartdal and Arild Blekesaune during 1990-92. Altogether, 33 farmers were analysed, giving the sociologists interviews, written diaries or reports as material. The farmers participated in the "30 farm-project", conducted by the Norwegian Centre for Ecological Agriculture. The sociologists described three categories of eco-farmers, according to whether the farmer was cosmopolitically or locally orientated: The antroposopher,the ecosopher and the reformist. Die gesteigerte Düngung ergab an beiden Standorten bei den meisten Parametern die erwarteten Effekte. Eine Wirkung der biologisch-dynamischen Präparate, entweder getrennt in Kompost- und Spritzpräparate, oder kombiniert angewendet, konnte ebenfalls bei mehreren Parametern nachgewiesen werden. Allerdings ist nach wie vor nicht klar, unter welchen Umständen diese Präparate wirken und warum sie z.T. gegensinnige Effekte haben. In dem hier vorgestellten Projekt stehen zur Zeit aus den letzten beiden Versuchsjahren noch diverse Parameter, u.a. einige Inhaltsstoffe (z.B. Die Beurteilung des Energieeinsatzes der Erzeugung von Lebensmitteln erfordert ein anderes Effizienzkriterium als die Erzeugung von Brennstoffen. Die Energieeffizienz (Wirkungsgrad) stellt die Relation bzw. den Quotient von Energiezufuhr (Input) zu der Zielgröße Ertrag (Output: Masse oder Energie) dar. Der Energieertrag selbst ist kein geeigneter Maßstab zur Parametrisierung der Energieeffizienz. Um unterschiedliche Ertragsleistungen (Masse oder Energie) bei der Effizienzbeurteilung zu berücksichtigen, sind ev. verschiedene Leistungsklassen zu bilden.

Nutritional quality of food can be characterized by the content of beneficial and harmful substances. For today’s consumers the most important criteria for buying potatoes are taste, quality and shelf-life. Biodynamic preparations are used by about 20% of all organic farms in Germany. According to SCHUPHAN (1961), food quality consists of three main characteristics: grading, technological quality and nutritional quality. Based on investigations with samples of a fertilization trial started in 1980, some parameters of storage ability are evaluated. Microbial infestation of the product during incubation seems to be the most reliable parameter. But the circumstances of infestation are as unknown as the optimal test conditions. There is no reliable correlation between results of degradation tests, storage tests under optimal conditions and chemical contents of the product.
